Introduction[]

The tag-team fighting game based on the original "Umineko When They Cry" series, finally released on Steam, in English and with improved rollback netplay!

George, Jessica, and Rosa from the Ushiromiya family join the fray, as this release of Golden Fantasia includes the Cross Expansion from the original Japanese version! All the lines used during combat, story mode, as well match opening and closings are fully voiced in Japanese to bring realism to your combat!

In Golden Fantasia, matches are tag-team fights between two pairs of characters from the Umineko series, each sharing HP building SP for each other through a unique mechanic - the touch system!

During combat players can consume their SP Gauge and initiate their Meta World, but only if your opponent chooses to or otherwise cannot argue their truth and cancel yours!

The 1st Movement is beginning!

Development and Release History[]

Ryukishi07 began development on Golden Fantasia around the time Banquet of the Golden Witch released, wanting to do it because "I simply wanted to play a fighting game of Umineko." The characters included in the first versions of the game were those who had fight scenes in the original story. Later versions added characters based on popularity poll results.[2] The game originally released on December 31, 2010 at Comiket 79. The version 1.10 update patch released on July 8, 2011 and added Jessica Ushiromiya as a playable character, as well as assorted story modes.[3]

The game was ported to the XBox 360 by Alchemist under the title Golden Fantasia X (黄金夢想曲X Ougon Musou Kyoku X) and released on October 6, 2011. It added George Ushiromiya and Rosa Ushiromiya as playable characters and changed the Touhou references that were in the original, including replacing Jessica's Marisa Kirisame outfit with the same one she wore in the PS3 port of the Umineko Question Arcs.

From July 15 to August 15, 2011, a campaign was held to advertise the next release of Ougon Musou Kyoku, tentatively titled Ougon Musou Kyoku 2. Fans were encouraged to submit artwork to 07th Expansion to be featured in-game as loading screens. The game would also include artwork from guest artists. The game ultimately released on December 31, 2011 as Golden Fantasia CROSS (黄金夢想曲†CROSS Ougon Musou Kyoku CROSS), adding Dlanor A. Knox, Erika Furudo, and Black Battler as playable characters. It also added a new control type called Princess Mode, allowing for easier button inputs, in response to many fans complaining about the difficult normal control scheme.[2] Bernkastel, Lambdadelta, and Willard H. Wright were teased to be added in later updates.[4] Will was added in version 2.10 on February 24, 2012, Lambda was added in version 2.20 on March 23, 2012,[5] and Bern was added in Version 2.30 on April 20, 2012.[6]

The CROSS version was officially translated into English by Witch Hunt and published by MangaGamer on December 8, 2017 under the title Umineko: Golden Fantasia.

The game was rereleased in Japan in 2021 for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 via a download code included with Symphony of Catbox and Dreams. This version removes the guest illustrations and fanart.[7]

Gameplay[]

Golden Fantasia consists of a 2D fighting style with sprites used for the characters. Players select two characters; the active character known as the Attacker and the inactive character known as the Reserve; and fight other pairs in matches. Gameplay involves the use of the Meta-World, enabling the use of super moves and activating passive abilities. Players are thus encouraged to switch between characters to make use of their abilities and to perform combos.

The player also has the option of playing Normal Mode or Princess Mode: Normal Mode is the standard control scheme while Princess Mode omits some moves but makes button inputs easier to do.

The HUD contains 6 gauges:

  • HP Gauge: A bar at the top of the screen that starts at blue and as damage is taken goes to yellow, then red. The health bar is shared by the two characters and if it empties, the round ends.
  • SP Gauge: A yellow meter under the HP gauge that resembles a bird wing. Each feather represents a single stock, adding up to 5, and special attacks will use up stocks. The Attacker and Reserve each have separate SP gauges, with the Reserve character's gauge appearing at the bottom of the screen. Stocks are built up for the Reserve when the Attacker deals or takes damage.
  • Break Limit Gauge: A pink meter under the HP Gauge. When attacks are guarded against, this meter fills up, and if it fills completely a guard break will occur, stunning the guarding character for a few seconds. The meter resets afterwards.
  • Meta-World Gauge: A red meter underneath the timer. When this is full, a player may declare Meta-World, costing 1 stock and changing the stage's appearance. When Meta-World is active, the passive abilities for the declaring player's characters will activate. The declaring player also becomes able to use their meta attacks for as long as Meta-World is active, so long as they keep making the correct button inputs. As soon as Meta-World is declared, the opposing player may cancel it by declaring Meta-World themselves; at which point the first player can declare it again, provided they have enough stocks.
  • Touch Gauge: A meter showing if the player can switch to the Reserve character. After switching, this meter goes to 0 and must be recharged over time.

Game Modes[]

  • Arcade: Players can set a difficulty setting and play through a set of 7 randomized rounds with short dialogue scenes between characters before and after each match. If specific pairs of characters are chosen then the player may experience their Story Mode, where 2 of these 7 matches will be scripted. Playing on Hard Mode will end with a battle against a pair of Black Battlers with every meta ability in the game (barring some abilities).
  • Versus: Players can play against a CPU, another local player, or play online in ranked matches.
  • Training: Players can train against a CPU/player-controlled opponent and enable various parameters.
