Appearance[]

Kawabata wears a dark green cap, white shirt, and blue vest. He has black hair.

Personality[]

Kawabata shows some disdain for people who talk about the Rokkenjima Mass Murders just to drive up ratings. He has some devotion to the Ushiromiya family and is happy at the thought he'll be able to finish the job he started long ago. Kawabata also has a great memory, remembering many details about the Ushiromiyas even after 12 years.

Background[]

Kawabata was one of several boat captains employed by Kinzo long ago for the purposes of bringing the Ushiromiya family members to and from the island. Kawabata's services also included disposing of trash and ferrying goods to the hidden harbor on Rokkenjima. He knew about the hidden mansion Kuwadorian and suspected that a person named Beatrice really was confined to the island, as many of these goods were things only women would use. After over 20 years of service, one day in 1968, Genji informed Kawabata and the other captains that there was no need to go to the hidden harbor anymore, seemingly due to Beatrice's death. Genji told Kawabata never to speak about Kuwadorian or the Hidden Side until the day he died[2]

Kawabata retired sometime after the Rokkenjima Mass Murders due to contracting a serious illness and would live with his son and daughter-in-law in their bed shop.[3] In 1998, Ange approaches Kawabata and asks to be taken to Rokkenjima one last time.

Ange goes downstairs and starts crying when she sees something in the bed shop however Kawabata is confused.
