Overview

Rudolf Ushiromiya (右代宮 留弗夫 Ushiromiya Rudorufu) is Kinzo Ushiromiya's third child and second son. He is the father of Battler Ushiromiya and Ange Ushiromiya.

Profile[]

Kinzo's third child.

Along with his sister, Eva, he intends to make his voice heard during the family conference to prevent their oldest sibling, Krauss, from keeping all of their father's wealth for himself.

His former wife, Asumu, passed away six years ago, and he married his current wife, Kyrie, shortly after that.

Appearance[]

Rudolf is a good looking middle-aged man who has slightly darker complexion than other family members, dark brown hair, light brown eyes and wears a dark gray suit and pants, with a white tie, black shirt and white ankle boots. The One-Winged Eagle is adorned on his left lapel.

Personality[]

Rudolf is shown to be sly and cunning. He has talent to do things that are borderline swindles or illegal and getting away with it. He is heartless to those he swindled and thinks it is not any of his business when he drove some of them to commit suicide. Rudolf is also a playboy who attracted and toyed with many women's feelings, thinking it fun to watch them fight over him.

However, he is also shown to be similar to Battler when he was younger, as out of all the Ushiromiya siblings, he was the most energetic one and joked around. When he was younger and was told that there are wolves in the forest, he said that he wanted to pat them, causing Kinzo to change the story that there were witches instead; Rudolf became scared and clung to Krauss for a while.

Despite always teasing Battler, he is also shown to care about him, and even gave Asumu's parents money to take care of him as well as take note of what is happening to Battler in school. He also loves guns and enjoys watching many Western films.

When his sister Rosa was still a child, Rudolf tormented her and bullied more than Krauss and Eva together, flirted with the servants occasionally to deprive her of the company of someone to play with and make friends and as shown in Twilight of the Golden Witch manga, he went so far as to destroy her rabbit rag doll, Uu-tan (something that Rosa herself in her adult years would unconsciously replicate it with her daughter). However, as he grew up he later expressed regret about how he treated her when they were younger.

In Requiem of the Golden Witch, his true nature is shown in the Tea Party when he proves willing to kill his own siblings and their families in order to keep all his father's money for himself and his family.

Abilities[]

Rudolf shows some proficiency in firing guns, especially Winchesters, as a result of his love for Western movies.

Background[]

Rudolf ran a company and started dating his coworker Kyrie, even though he was already married to Asumu. He ended up getting both women pregnant, with Asumu giving birth to Battler while Kyrie had a miscarriage. Twilight of the Golden Witch reveals that Kyrie was actually the one to give birth to Battler while Asumu had the miscarriage. Rudolf didn't want it known that he had an illegitimate child and so he bribed the doctors to swap the results; Kyrie wound up believing she had a miscarriage while Battler believed Asumu was his biological mother.

Asumu suddenly died six years later, and Rudolf married Kyrie soon after at the cost of straining his relationship with Battler. Rudolf and Kyrie then had Ange. In 1986, Rudolf seeks to reconnect with Battler after so long.

Relationships[]

Overview[]

Battler Ushiromiya[]

Rudolf is Battler's father, however the two haven't gotten along very well ever since Rudolf married Kyrie. Battler believed Rudolf betrayed his dead mother Asumu with this act and was disgusted, abandoning the family name and going to live with his grandparents for a while. During this time, Rudolf sent money to Asumu's parents to pay for Battler's living expenses and stated he wanted to be involved in his sons schooling events, only refraining because he told him not to. They still interacted on Ange's birthday, where Rudolf would nonchalantly say "he could come home anytime he wanted".

This continued on until the death of Asumu's parents, when at their funeral Battler told Rudolf he would return home and put the whole issue behind him if he apologised, reasoning that Asumu wouldn't want them to fight. Rudolf does this to the fullest extent, apologising on his hands and knees, disregarding his very important "cool image" in an attempt to reconnect with his son. Even after they reunite in 1986, the two still aren't on good terms; Battler calls his father a bastard at times, and Rudolf jokes that he would gladly hand off his son to robbers. Despite their relationship, Battler still sheds tears anytime his parents are killed and Rudolf does truly love his son from the bottom of his heart.

Kyrie Ushiromiya[]

Rudolf is Kyrie's husband. At family conferences, Kyrie sometimes speaks with other people, which Rudolf dislikes. Kyrie also does her best not to make Rudolf feel inferior in this way.[2] In times where Kyrie is able to get involved, she can corner people in negotiation, something Rudolf appreciates.[3]

Ange Ushiromiya[]

Rudolf is Ange's father. While their relationship is never greatly expanded in the story, Rudolf does greatly love Ange from the bottom of his heart and so does she, fondly remembering him and Kyrue dearly and part of the reason she refused to accept Eva as her new mother was because she doesn't think anyone could ever replace her parents.

Rosa Ushiromiya[]

Compared to Krauss and Eva, Rudolf seems to be the only sibling with whom Rosa has a peaceful relationship. However, as shown in the Turn of the Golden Witch Tea Party, as kids Rudolf would do the same things to Rosa that Krauss and Eva did. The Requiem of the Golden Witch manga shows a brief flashback to Rosa's childhood where Rudolf would also deprive her of friends to play with among the young servants and destroyed her precious stuffed rabbit in front of her.

Role In the Story[]

Legend of the Golden Witch[]

Collaborated with his siblings in an attempt to get money out of Krauss. Afterwards, he wanted to meet with Kyrie and Battler about something important, ominously stating "I will probably be killed tonight."

He never got the chance to talk about it, having been a victim of the first twilight.

His corpse was found inside the rose garden storehouse. His face seems to have been smashed after death.

He has a right to lament his ill fortune.

Turn of the Golden Witch[]

Was a victim of the first twilight.

His corpse was found in the chapel.

The direct cause of death is unknown, but it seems his stomach was cut open and his intestines pulled out after his death.

On top of that, sweets and candies were packed into his stomach.

This is why we want to be as sweet and innocent as candy.

Banquet of the Golden Witch[]

Went to the mansion with Kyrie and Hideyoshi to retrieve food, only to be killed by EVA-Beatrice as the fourth twilight.

Died in the hall of the mansion, with his forehead pierced by a weapon shaped like a stake.

Apparently, they've gotta be finished off with stakes from here on out. Gross.

Alliance of the Golden Witch[]

Was a victim of the first twilight, killed by Chiester 00.

His corpse was found in the dining hall.

About half his head was destroyed. It's probably reasonable to assume that he was murdered with a powerful gun or something similar.

However, the witnesses don't believe he was killed with a gun...

End of the Golden Witch[]

After Battler and Erika solve the epitaph, he makes another reference to talking to Battler about something, again ominously saying "I will probably be killed tonight."

When the rest of the family casts doubts over Kinzo's existence, he goes up to his study window using a ladder and breaks it open.

Requiem of the Golden Witch[]

In the Tea Party it's revealed that Rudolf and Kyrie are the true culprits of the Rokkenjima Mass Murder Incident. After discovering the gold along with the other adults, he and Kyrie planed to take it all for themselves by murdering everyone on the island and escaping to Kuwadorian with the gold. Rudolf and Kyrie then call each of the children one by one, with Rudolf assigned to kill George. After killing him, Rudolf is swiftly killed by Eva, who he thought was dead; he gets shot in the chest and then the head.

Twilight of the Golden Witch[]

During the quiz session, he pulls Kyrie in private and reveals his secret: she and Asumu were set to give birth on the same day, and Kyrie actually gave birth to Battler while Asumu had a miscarriage. He didn't want it known that he had a child with his mistress, so he bribed a doctor to switch the results. He decided to reveal this after seeing how Kyrie acted towards Battler for so long.

In Bernkastel's game he ends up being the culprit along with Battler and Kyrie.

Other Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Rudolf's appearance was modeled after the actor Clint Eastwood.[4]
  • In End of the Golden Witch, Rudolf sings a song about "Ira Bauer", referencing the character Jack Bauer from the American TV show 24. This is most likely a reference to the fact that Rikiya Koyama, Rudolf's voice actor in the anime, also voiced Bauer in the Japanese dub of 24 and sang a similar song in a commercial.
